This pencil drawing of a cross-country race calls out the danger inherent in such sports. The competitor taking a fence notes a fallen horse off to the side surrounded by doctors and the rider. This drawing on medium-weight paper measures 14 by 17 inches and does not have a mat.(SOLD)

This pencil drawing, which measures 14 inches square, is a rough sketch on light paper, which has been affixed to foam board. This drawing may well have been Mr. Savitt’s concept for a painting. There is some smudging on the paper, but it is a well-executed piece of a rider in fox-hunting attire. Price $125. (sold)

Featured on the cover of the Jan/Feb 2019 issue of UnTacked magazine, this is a limited-edition print, created in the 1980’s and signed by Sam Savitt at that time. While this web site normally sells only original art, this item is being offered because of the UnTacked article. It measures 25 by 18 inches.  Price: $95.

This pencil drawing, which measures 14 inches square, is a rough sketch executed on light paper, which has been affixed to foam board. I rate the condition of the drawing as “fair,” but it is a very good representation of Sam Savitt’s ability to capture the horse in motion. The words at the bottom of the page, “bareback bronc” are his notes. Price $100.

This pencil drawing was very loosely (and perhaps quickly) drawn. Frequently, Mr. Savitt would do rough quick-study sketches that formed the basis of a more finished product later on. When on assignment, he would rarely take photos. This sketch measures 10.5 by 14 inches and has neither a mat nor frame.

This splendid little pen and ink drawing — the companion to another that appears on this web site — was created for the 1959 book entitled “Born to Race.” Drawn on heavy paper, this piece measures 8 by 11 inches and contains publisher’s notes in the bottom margin.

This painting (offered by a third party) is one of a portfolio of  eight highly refined paintings of thoroughbred horses from 1955. We are unsure about the medium: It is probably casein or gouche. The frame measures 21 by 25 inches. Price: $2,000.

This detailed pencil drawing was no doubt the sketch that preceded a painting about fox hunting. This large and exciting rendering measures 19 by 26 inches on paper affixed to Styrofoam poster board and it is slightly dulled by age.
